The History of HAIDC
Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) has been
the designated Infectious Disease Centre in Hong Kong since 1975 with a strong
team of Infectious Disease experts. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, PMH was
designated as the SARS hospital, and had managed over one third of all the
confirmed SARS patients in Hong Kong. Post SARS review by the Hong Kong
Government recommended the need for surge capacity in the public healthcare
system. In 2004, the Legislative Council approved to build the first
Infectious Disease Centre (IDC) in Hong Kong at PMH, Hospital Authority
(HA). The HAIDC at PMH commenced its operation on 21 April 2007, and was
officially opened on 22 June 2007.
The ID Centre is the tertiary
referral centre for managing infectious disease in
Hong Kong. The 17-storey building is equipped with state-of-the-art building
service providing the highest standards of infection control and isolation
facilities. There are altogether 108 isolation beds which include 14 ICU beds.
